The psychologist had told him: one word. One word to describe you. Adjective or noun or verb. And he, at forty-five, all competence and charisma or so he thought, had burst into tears where he sat.

“I am a happily-married forty-five year old man.”

“Okay, and the one word?” The shrink again. More forceful than he expected. 

She proffered a tissue which, as he ignored it, seemed to melt back into her hand. The woman was slight, bespectacled, with a rigour about her long neck as if the muscle and bone in it had been scaffolded by Health and Safety. Too many nuts and bolts there, he thought, too much trouble. The spectacles sat across her face like a window cleaner’s platform. Too much work, too much work done on that angular cheekbone and accurate chin. He thought: this whole thing is too much work.

‘Forty-five,’ he tried. ‘Happy. I don’t know.’
‘I just thought — ’
‘Two children, lovely wife, nice house in north London.’
‘And that’s you?’
‘It can’t be me or I wouldn’t be here.’
‘It’s not you.’
‘Ok — white.’
The room stopped. He didn’t know why he had said that.
‘White?’
‘Grey.’
‘Your name is White, yes?’ She was consulting the notepad in her lap, as if she needed to, since it had been in the papers, the local papers anyway.
‘Grey is my name.’
‘I wondered if you were just saying your name for some reason.’
‘Okay, let’s go with grey. That’s my word.’
‘Grey.’
‘Yes.’ Stick with it, he told himself. ‘That’s my word.’
‘To sum up your life?’
‘Grey as in grey.’
And she leant over, baring her teeth, and said: “Grey men don’t rob banks.”

This story was started by BBC Radio 2 presenter Jeremy Vine. Read about Jeremy on his author profile page. The story so far...John is a grey man in a murky world. He finds himself being questioned by an unknown psychologist before realising he is actually being held prisoner because of secrets he may have revealed whilst working as an IT consultant to a foreign bank. Grace, a beautiful IT security expert, returns from holiday to find confusing email messages from John whilst Kate, his devoted wife, is starting to get concerned about his disappearance. Breaking an unwritten rule, she enters his home office to look for clues which may help her track him down. Meanwhile, John remains locked in a stark white room unsure how long he’s been there or what the secrets his captors want him to reveal are.
