"Where is he? Where the hell is he?" 
Ian peered out of the rain splattered window, glanced down at his watch and shook his head for the third time in two minutes. His disbelief was mutating into tension by the second. 

Nina sat quietly trying to stay calm under the situation. It was now 10.15pm.....Jake had been due at 8; he said he would have already eaten and looked forward to seeing Ian. It had been a very long time since they had seen each other but a chance encounter a few days earlier had reignited a dormant friendship, a deep bond that went back a very long way.

"I just can’t believe it.” Ian’s frustration was now turning into worry and he now wondered if Jake had been involved in an accident. He shook his head for the last time that evening, backed away from the window and went to the next room where he put his headphones on one more time before retiring to bed.

Ian had been a successful musician. In his mind he was the best but times had moved on; he wasn’t as confident or pushy as he had been and money was a bit thin on the ground. He was constantly aware of the need to increase his income but some days the process just baffled him. Anyway each day, bar Saturdays and Sundays, after having taken Sammy his opportunistic pug on his ritualistic walk around the local park and given him his ritualistic bowl of pedigree mulch, he marched determinedly into the back room where he composed and fiddled with his latest compositions until bed time.

Today was Tuesday. He was just about to launch into guitar overdub no.3, had one finger poised above the record command key on his computer, when the phone rang. He disentangled himself from headphones and guitar: “Hello…who’s that?”

"It’s Jake. I’m really sorry about last night. You won’t believe what happened. Last night at about 7 o’clock I was trying to park my Dutch barge in the new moorings at Canary Wharf and it became a nightmare. I kept having to back out of my space, realign and have another shot at parking. You’ve only got six feet on either side so it’s a delicate manoeuvre that requires a lot of skill, which I used to have, but I haven’t sailed her in a year and my navigational skills are not quite what they were."

"Wow", exclaimed Ian. “Didn’t you have any help?”

“Well, the lad that helped me in the past wasn’t around so I had this other chap who was useless and I had to do nearly everything myself! I was really losing my rag with him. At one point we had quite an audience on the quayside witnessing this amusing escapade.”

"Did you hit any of the other boats?" asked Ian. 

"No, thank God because we’re talking super yachts and super launches owned by very rich neighbours. I mean can you imagine the damage that would be made by me just nudging one of those pleasure palaces with a steel hulled barge?"

Ian listened incredulously as Jake painted his vivid picture.

“Anyway, so you can imagine I was dying for a drink and went to my local pub and then a couple of friends of mine joined me as it was St Patrick’s eve and I was, I think, half way through my third glass of wine when I suddenly thought ‘oh my God - I haven’t called Ian’ and believe it or not the batteries were dead in my mobile!’

Ian listened in stunned sympathetic disbelief at Jake’s hapless story. “My Lord!" spluttered Ian. “What a night!"

“You’re telling me", gasped Jake. “But listen, I’ll call you on Monday and we can arrange to meet up then. And once again I do apologise Ian.”

“That’s alright Jake. I suppose I was just really worried something had happened to you.”

“Once again, sorry mate. I’ll call you Monday. Bye Ian. Bye."
 
Today is Friday and Jake hadn't been in contact.
